How much to take to China & Hong Kong by Blairhoyle on 9 May 2006 9:50am

I'm off exactly one month today for a month, my flights and hotels are booked so basically all I'll need to spend on is food, drink, internal travel and I dare say the odd bit of shopping.

I'm looking for a quick low down on living costs as I dont want to be going in with a wade of money then finding out it isnt needed. Three weeks in China and 1 in Hong Kong I was thinking about taking £300 for each country and taking $300US in case I need to exchange some more.

what do you think?

You can eat yourself to a standstill in China for next to nothing.

I remember one evening there were five of us in a cheap-and-cheerful restaurant. When the bill came I needed to visit the bog, so I asked how much and was told the equivalent of about £5. I plonked my money down, went to the lav and returned to find a not much smaller pile of cash waiting for me.

It was about £5 for the five of us.

the biggest expence is accommodation and seeing as youve got that already you really don't need too much money. taxi rides can be a bit on the pricey side but they are easily avoided.

one thing to be aware of are the scams, there are more in china than ive seen anywhere else and they can be fool even the experienced traveller. so if you can avoid getting ripped off i think the amount you are taking shold be fine, obviously take a back up just in case.

have fun, you'll love it.
