Best NZ / Oz guide book by cjcottam on 16 May 2006 4:37pm

Hello all,

Me and my wife are taking a brief respite back in the UK from a round the world trip. Our next destination is New Zealand and Australia and we were wondering what guides people would reccomend. For the USA - the Rough Guide was superb, but for South America the Rough Guide seemed quite poor in comparison to the Footprint guide. Anyone care to reccomend one above any others?

Cheers,

Chris Cottam

I have the Lonely Planet book on Australia. I can thoroughly recommend it.

If you aren't visiting too many Australian states / territories, buy the individual state guides from Lonely Planet - much greater detail. If you're just visiting the east coast, you could buy Lonely Planet's East Coast Australia guide. Lonely Planet's New Zealand guide is also good.

Not sure which guide but would recommend you book accomadation at the Fox / Franz Joseph Glacier in advance.
NZ is great for camping Nov - March and cheap.
Trans Alpine train and the Inter Islander ferry can be booked direct online, look at there web sites definetly book in advance to save money.
Smaller places we enjoyed where Lake Tekapo, Arrowtown, Akaroa and Marahau in the Abel Tasman national park.
As for Oz we use needitnow.com for late hotel bookings.
