Cat Stevens/Yousaf Islam his music

I was watching the TV prog the other day called IMAGINE and it was all about Cat Stevens or Yousaf Islam as he is known now - and it was so touching a programme that i am now listening to a cd of Cat Stevens hits - it was a very profound programme and Yousaf came across as a very caring person - he has a new album in the making which sounded really good
did you know that shortly after he was not allowed into the usa as they thought him a terrorist threat that Yousaf was awared the Man of Peace award - he has donated a lot of his royalties to educating and schools for muslim children and works hard for peace
i was really impressed with the whole ethos of the programme and wondered if any other person watched this and was moved by it or already admires his work?

I did see the programme and am really pleased that he has started singing again. I really loved his music before. Before the programme I didn't know that he had been give the Man of Peace award.
It was a very interesting programme.
I love all his songs but particularly like "Moon Shadow".

I am glad he has "calmed" down. Years ago, he backed the Iranian fatwa to murder author Salman Rushdie. |

He was very misquoted at the time Mike - all he said was that Muslims should obey the Koran. He did not say they should obey the imams who were calling for the fatwa. At the time, he was engrossed in establishing a school. He was not interested in politics but the media harrassed him as he was the first publically known British Muslim and he was pushed into making a comment, which he did. However, the media, in its usual crass manner, made the most of it.
I did see the programme and it was good to see that he is writing songs again. I still play "Teaser and the Firecat" and "Tea for the Tillerman" on ocassion. I saw him at the Marquee club back in the 60's. He was very charismatic.

In that case, I stand corrected Linz. |

His songs are great in the movie Harold and Maude. |

Wow, Linz, you're OLD!
JUST KIDDING! You know I love ya!
I like his music very much. I wouldn't say he's on my list of desert island discs, but like him a lot. He seemed to me to be an early "Christian" rocker! That's before we had that phrase in our lexicon. Not preachy at all, but he seemed to be exploring that spiritual sensibility, I could be wrong.
"Morning has Broken" is one of my favs. Obviously he didn't write it, but what a gorgeous arrangement and vocal. (Rick Wakeman on piano, pre-Yes, another reason I'm into the song!)
When I was diagnosed with MS, I was having a great deal of difficulty walking, and had lost 80% of the sight in one eye, not knowing at the time that, for the most part, it owuld come back, and then happen episodically. I just thought I had lost my faculties... It was an historic day in my life when they happened to play "Moonshadow" on the radio and I was calm and receptive enough to hear it. "And if I ever lose my eyes, I won't have to cry no more." That may be a serious "spin," but I really needed that at the time.

Cori--I never knew Wakeman played piano on that tune. I have Teaser and the Firecat too--maybe I should read the liner notes?
Catch Bull at Four is genius...one of my fave CDs in my collection.
and I love Moonshadow, too. ((hugs to my buddy))
