the most welcoming chap in Ireland? by MarcoP on 5 November 2006 1:40pm

Beautiful experience - want to share it.
It was like 1995 (oh migawd it's 11 years ago, how time flies), I was on an InterRail travel through the British Isles, having already visited some England and a couple of places in Scotland and at the time being in Ireland. Me and my travel companion Federico, one of my best friends, arrived to Ballina in western Ireland, roughly midway between Galway and Sligo, in county Mayo (don't ask).
Our train was quite late (one of the two only late trains we encountered in the whole of the UK and Ireland), so we got there quite late, around 10-ish in the evening. We asked a nice chap working at the station where we could go and pitch a tent, and he pointed us to a big "grassy place" (not really a park, just a big place just outside the town). We went there, and unfortunately we found that the circus was pitched there. No way I'd sleep within the rank of elephant dung. If I can help at least. So, on we go up a hill. On the right, rocks. On the left, pretty posh houses. After a while, with no interruption to this pattern whatsoever, we decide to ask information. Knocking on a dor (no alternatives). So, we find a house with light from a window and we knock. A young gentleman comes out, a baby in his arms and the TV remote control in his shirt pocket. We ask him if he knows of a quiet place where we can pitch our tent. He seems to think for a second, speaks to someone inside the house in Gaelic (female voice - the wife, we assume) then points at his very own garden. "There, be my guests."
Honestly, amazing.
