I was quite pleased to learn that THIS YEAR's chosen effigies for conflagration at Edenbridge's (Kent) Annual Bonfire Celebrations on Saturday Nov.8,in front of 20,000 revellers are (Guess who?): Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand.
These effigies reach up to 30feet tall, and are mounted on a framework.Talk about"larger than life":the Ross one reaches 25 feet,is made from papier mache, and has him typically dressed in suede boots and garish lounge suit and bright white tie,and he is cradling under his arm the head of Russell Brand, who has somehow morphed into a white Jack Russell terrier! Rather appropriate.

Previous figures of fun who have been immolated in this way include: Anne Robinson,Saddam Hussein,Cherie Blair,John McCririck, and John Prescott.

They go in for this in a big way in that part of the country, bB. Husband & I attended one - about 20 years ago.

Joining-euro-single currency was hot news then.
At the time of lighting the guy - no-one seemed to know who it was - the organiser said firmly 'We've got a message for the Prime Minister' and the guy appeared, words appeared in fireworks 'Hands off Britannia'and she was the effigy, the figure on £1 coins.

So in that part of Kent they certainly didn't like the idea of currency changes! They always try to be topical, I think.

Good fun evenings. Whole villages turn out.
