I think we all know people who have taken their own lives. It's tragic. The stories I have will remain private.

.

John and Kazzz, sorry to hear you both have experiences similar to my own. I suppose we all feel 'if only they had said something to me' but we can't get inside people's heads.

Well, perhaps these things SHOULD be kept private, but your sad losses have reminded me of a friend who we lost in the 1980s.

Zak and I were both members of the local Festival Committee, and attended meeting through out the year (the actual Festival was, and still is, held over a week in June).

I think I was Minutes Secreatry at the time, and the lady who was Festival Secretary, C. became friends with us (well we were all pretty friendly). Her youngest child would come and play with our kids, and this particular Festival year we had both gone onto local BBC radio to promote the Festival.

One evening we were at a meeting - for some reason I seem to think it was AFTER that year's Festival. I had just had a hair crimper and Zak and I had crimped my hair - it was quite fashionable at the time. I had had a lot of compliments that evening, but after the meeting C came up to talk to me and said about my hair 'Mmmm, I'm not sure...'. I felt quite miffed about this, and didn't speak to her again that evening.

The next day, the Festival Chairman phoned us to say that C had taken her life.

There was no doubt at all that she had meant to do it, as she had put various Festival papers in boxes/bundles for me, as her replacement as Secretary, as well as other things for people. Tidying her life up, really.

Of course my hair had nothing to do with it. She was divorced, and had been let down by a man. She had only one kidney (and only part of that) and was taking meds for it - she took an overdose of this medication. But I couldn't and still can't get out of my head that the last time I saw her I was annoyed over a silly hairstyle - she was being honest after all. Perhaps the only one who WAS??

The Chairman, who at the time was an eminent spinal surgeon (and had been Prince Charles doc in the army) attended the Coroners Court - I offered to go too but he said it would be too upsetting.

One of the saddest thing was after the funeral, filing out and shaking the hand of her son, then about 11 I think, who was very red-eyed and naturally upset - but asked ME if I was ok! Very moving.

[As a lighter note, as Festival Secretary I used to have regular phonecalls from Anthea Turner, who was then a lowly researcher on local radio, concerning Festival events!! Bet she doesn't remember ME!]

Can we ditch this thread ? Unhappy beginning which led to unhappy memories for some of us.

Yes, let this thread fade away. Sorry to have brought forth sadness from your past(s). Please forgive me.

Thanks Pete. I'm fine. The topic of censorship was a good one.

I'm well known for wanting the last word. :)
Pete, I know you to be a kind and thoughtful man.

Loretto, I haven't sent you any daft emails for ages. :) Best wishes to you. x
