Annie is appalled!!! by Spursfan on 4 September 2008 10:36am

The local free newspaper has just thudded through the letterbox, bringing with it the usual array of local advertising.

One that caught my eye was a menu for a local tavern, (I'm not going to give them free advertising by naming them, but bIG bLOGGER it is near Sainsburys!!)

Amongst the usual fare they have a section on 'Alternative International Meats' and this is what appalled me!!

This is what they have on offer:

Australian Kangaroo (with caramelised pear & red currant glaze)

North American Bison (with wild mushrooms, truffle & porter sauce)

Chargrilled South African Ostrich (with buttered veg & red onion chutney)

It gets worse:

South African Pan-fried Springbuck (with sauted potatoes)

South African Crocodile Tail (with mango and basil sauce)

South African Zebra (!!) (with red wine and shallot marmalade)

South African Impala (with oyster mushrooms and miniature pumpkins)

Roasted South African Wildebeest (with figs and blue cheese)

Roasted Swedish Reindeer (Rudolph!!!) (marinated in cider with creamed celery)

Is it just me?

Wouldn't zebras, springbucks etc be better off in the wild (before you say it Johnny, ok, making a meal for the lions!!) than on someone's plate?

Wouldn't eating zebra be rather like eating horse which we all abhor?

Am I being a hypocrite seeing as how I love roast dinners? [but then I can only eat meat when I think of it as something that comes from the supermarket or the butchers, rather than a once living thing - weird I know!!]

Whatever, I am going to boycott this tavern - not that it'll make any difference I suppose!!

Disgusted of Stafford
(better known as Annie!!)

Horse meat is eaten in lots of countries.

I just read about a place in China which actually specialises in rat dishes. One local restaurant there actually has two cages hanging out the front with two big rats in them.

Oh and by the way Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer comes from Finland, so you should be right to tuck into the Swedish variety. ;)

As for the South African animals listed, they've been consumed by humans for countless millennia.

However, I find myself becoming progressively more vegetarian over time.

Oh that's alright then - it isn't Rudolph!!

Yes I know about the horse meat eating and I am sure the other animals are eaten in their own countries, but I still find it appalling that they should be offered HERE.

Maybe I am being too sensitive....

Well we can buy kangaroo and crocodile meat in our supermarkets alongside beef and lamb.

I don't eat any of the above. I only eat fish and chicken, but saying that, you either eat animals or you don't, there is no middle ground.

Wow.. did you know that corals and sea sponges are actually animals?

Not that I'm likely to start eating sea sponges or coral any time soon :)

It IS me being over-sensitive, isn't it!!!

Cattle and sheep farming is a very inefficient way to use land.

Then again, you can't make leather or wool out of soya beans..

I'm more appalled by the idea of creamed celery... ;-)

And rightly so Ellerd, celery has feelings too ya know!
