My sick parakeet by mrsthing on 13 October 2008 8:50pm

Prayers, happy thoughts, good vibes, whatever, for my little blue parakeet Alaea. I know he's just a little bird, but I'm so fond of him. He's been battling an intestinal infection, and he's nothing but skin and bones under his feathers. He's also hurt his wing--it may be broken, though he can fly a little with it. He's spending the night at the vet so they can pump him up with food and fluids, x-ray his wing, and start his medication.

His cage mate is very unhappy, too. She'll have to get treatment as well when he gets home (please, make it "when" and not "if"). The infection is contagious, and it takes a long time to get rid of it.

In a nasty coincidence, the other blue parakeet we had died on Columbus Day weekend two years ago.

Thinking of little Alaea and hope that he will be OK.

Ohhh poor little thing. I really hope he will be OK. I had a sick budgie a few years ago, he had an op and recovered fully! Alaea is an ace name, where does that come from?

The vet called a little while ago to say he was doing well: eating, drinking, hopping around in his cage. The x-ray didn't come out, so they have to reshoot it tomorrow. If all goes well, he can come home tomorrow afternoon.

My daughter made up his name. Our first two were Raedon and Vyrna, the names of two dragons in a book she read. Vyrna died, and we got Alaea. She was in a phase of giving things Hawaiian-sounding names. He doesn't seem to mind. ;-)

He's NOT 'just a little bird', Mrs. T! He's YOUR little bird. To me he deserves all the thought and love I can pass on to him.

Glad he is doing better.

Good news! His wing isn't broken, just badly bruised, and he can come home today! He and his cage mate need meds for the next 30 days, but at least he'll be home and on the mend.

Thanks for your support, everyone!
