One year on by kazzzz on 7 February 2010 11:44am

A year ago today was Black Saturday when 173 people lost their lives in the worst bushfires this country has ever seen.

The ABC screened a two hour documentry tonight, real stories from real people who were affected. It was so very sad. there was a minute's silence at midday today and also many remembrance services around the country.

It was near to us, there were kids lost from my daughter's school, as well as many many homes.

Hope to never see anything like that again in my lifetime.

My college roommate lives in Wollongong, we called her to make sure she was okay the minute we heard it on the news. I think it was the middle of the night when we called. She was fine. They showed pictures of a fireman holding a baby Koala, scorched and weakened from the fires. Funny what you remember about world events. I didn't know it took 173 lives Kazzz, we can clone sheep, restore lost eye sight with teeth, text message, skype, and on and on but we can not control nature.

A year ago today, Kazz, I had so many candles going for you and Missy and some other friends undergoing challenges (not fires, but weird family crap and health issues) that the smoke alarm should've gone off.
Tonight, a year on, I'm just grateful that everyone made it through.

I'm hoping you don't either, Kaz. But thing is with nature, you never know do you? I'm just glad you're still here to talk about it. Nature is a funny thing. I never thought I'd feel an earthquake, but we had one in Market Raisen (4.5 or something) and we felt it here in Leeds, and my Mom felt it in Sheffield. I was scared witless. I know it was only a 4.5, but if you are not used to them, even that can be scary. Funny thing is, I never felt any in Japan, Which is in an Earthquake zone and yet I felt one here! Weird!

Loretto, WOllongong is about 500 miles from here so she would have been safe.

Fran that's really nice :)it's very good that everyone's through a bad patch.

And Terry, we had a few fairly large tremors here last year, was an odd year all in all.

It sounds it. Keep safe, eh?

How are people there coping now, having lost so much?

Re: One year on by peripatetically on 8 February 2010 1:28pm

Yes, OZ had a very tragic time and I'm sure psychological scars were left for the survivors of some incidents. I'm so thankful that your family was spared and also Missy's. Sometimes I did think about that, Kaz. Especially when we had dry spells here last year. I knew ours weren't anywhere near the problems you had.
