European Castles by DaveWatson on 10 February 2010 2:23pm

Why can't Mr Palin do a show on great castles of Europe. The castle from El Cid to the movie Where Eagles Dare. These are great movie castles as well as many many more. Like the one that inspired Walt Disney...its in germany somewhere. Great idea for a series even if its a short one.

Dave, welcome. I like your idea. I think it would be fun to do an episode on the ones on the border between England and Wales. There are some lovely ones in France, too.

Nice idea. he could do it, but will he? lol

The German castle is Neuschwanstein. I've been there several times. It's worth learning about it. I have also been inside the castle across the street, where King Ludwig was born and grew up. Inside that castle is much more to see as far as furnishings, but most people like to visit the 'fairy tale' castle built by the crazy king of Bavaria. It was from here he was taken when the populace realized and finally decided to do something about it that Ludwig was bankrupting his domain of Bavaria by spending money in crazy ways and not taking care of his subjects. Neuschwanstein , in the southern Alps, was only one of his extravagances. You really have to visit to believe his questionable sanity, or insanity. He built several others too, but this one was his "baby".A very ethereal place. Well worth a visit in a magnificnet setting. As a boy, he did his daydraming out a window from the castle of his birth, Hohenschwangau, by gazing dreamily at the precipice across the street. He decided then and there he would build his escape castle as it seemed to be set in heaven to him. The views from the windows are unbelievable gorgeous. He was a daydreamer and unrealistic in many ways. Rather 'touched".
