Oil Depot Explosions by perfectbitch on 11 December 2005 9:51am

I hope any of you who live near the area are ok. I was awake at 5.50am and I heard my windows rattle in their frames. I thought that there must have been a terrorist attack at somewhere like the BBC or Heathrow. I live over 25 miles away so I can only imagine how it must be for those who live a lot closer. Keep safe. Linz

Wow, feeling it from 25 miles away! We're getting some amazing pictures here but the news reports are still very sketchy. They don't seem to have any ideas yet about casualities or the cause.

The sky became quite dark here in North London about 3 o'clock this afternoon. Could it have been the soot and smoke from the explosions, I wonder?

The BBC is reporting 43 injured, two seriously, but no deaths so far, which is good news. Given what I've seen on the news, its surprising that there haven't been any more casualties. The article below has a satellite image of southern England, showing how far the soot has spread:

Here's hoping they manage to put it out today. I just cant believe something like this can happen and rage for so long. Surely there should be a way of draining the fuel supply to somewhere of safety in the event of something like this. The radio this morning said that twenty fuel stores had blown and they are worrying that three more could still go up.

It's good to see from this evening's news that the fire is under control and the main burning areas are extinguished. Considering the size of the blaze I think the firefighters have done a very good job in deaing with it in two and a half days.

we heard it in bow, near canary wharf, it woke me up but i wasn't sure what it was. i heard all the dogs barking in the flat below us. then when i got up at 11 the cloud had already nearly reached the canary wharf tower. it was creepy because i didn't know what it was till i turned on the news! i'm glad it's all over!

Police have confirmed reports that George Best wasn't buried in Belfast as previously stated. They accept it was a mistake having him cremated in Hemel Hempstead.
