Jarhead by tucsonmike on 13 December 2005 3:38am

I probably would not have read Jarhead, except it's in Mr. P's bibliography. (If he could respond, I'd be curious as to why he put it there).

I got my draft card, but the draft was discontinued before I got my physical, so only through relatives do I have any military contact. (Also curious, any ex service(wo)men here? Doesn't matter which army). I went to college instead of enlisting in the Navy, which I was toying with.

What I found interesting, was after all that training, he didn't fire a shot in anger in Iraq. Lots of artillery (friendly and Iraqi) raining in and he saw the results of war, but he never fired his own shots.

I got the impression, he was very different from his Marine comrades. Until he explained later in the book, I was baffled as to what prompted him to enlist in the first place.

He kept my attention, about a world I could not fathom. These guys seemed to enjoy fighting for fightings sake. I guess, I just as a young man didn't have that cause I would kill for...

Well written, at times disturbing book.

In "peacetimes", whenever they may be, some youngsters join up for reasons of securty - job, care etc. It is difficult to justify killing for most causes but there are times when a stand has to be made. I would not have liked to be born into a world where the Nazi's governed Europe for instance.

I suppose that I believe that fighting/killing may be justified to protect family and freedom of thought.

I certainly would have fought against the Nazis...It's not as though I would not fight. I'm not one to fight for the "joy" of it. Yes, the Nazis would have been enough to make me do something. If I were a kid now, I might have enlisted because of 9/11...
