Doing for Someone Else. An Essay. by tucsonmike on 31 December 2005 5:08am

I may write this up for my series of essays, but don't know yet. It is about a former boss and good friend (We've been friends for my goodness, thirty years next weekend!

I didn't exactly meet Susi on the best of terms. The program is Close Up. It teaches students (well now seniors as well ) about the U.S. Government. I was a high school student on it less then a year earlier. Now, I was going back as what was called an alumni assistant. Sort of an intern. Check out the website

It might be something other countries can do with their governments.
Well here I am, wiseass (but inwardly insecure) nineteen year old from Brooklyn, New York. I am on the train from New York to Washington for three weeks.
Well, as I said a wiseass. I smoked at the time (thought I was really hot stuff) went out in the vestibule at the end of the coach to light up. There I am in the cold, snow on the vestibule platform, dressed in sweatshirt jeans, and New York Mets cap. No sooner did I light the cigarette, than the conductor, a shorter middle aged gentleman told me to put it out and get back inside.
I looked down at him. "Yo, you're jokin' right?"
"No I'm not, young man."
"Oh yeah, what are ya gonna do 'bout it?" Sounding like pure Canarsie. I tried to act initimidating and moved closer.
He patted his radio. "Young man I will contact the Delaware State Police." (We had just left Wilmington and I knew the next stop was Baltimore. That's why I went to have the cigarette).
I thought of pressing the issue, but then, it occured to me. That would have been an interesting telephone call home. "Dad I never made it to Washington."
"Well where are you?"
"Newark, Delaware."
"Why? What happened."
"I was arrested on the train."
Anything past this would have been a nightmare.
Continued tomorrow. I have been sent to my room...
