"A" Mountain. This is the central point in the city. The official name of the Mountain is Sentinel Peak. In 1915, U of A Students, originally as a prank put up the "A". They paint it different colors. It will be green for St. Patricks Day.

If I get ambitious, I'll hike to the top Thursday and take pictures.

Not just would I get in trouble Phyllis. It would be just a touch on the dangerous side. No I wouldn't want to live that one down. And it was the mountain I was going to hike up, not the tram. So Silly Phyllis.

I may be different, Renee, but I have fun.

It is Purple. The funny part is that neighborhood is really a combination of several neighborhoods.
The University was founded in 1885. When it was founded, it was put there, because back then you were out in the desert. A lobbyist was sent to Prescott (then Arizona's Capital) to bring something back. When he brought back the University, he was nearly lynched. People in Tucson wanted the insane asylum, figuring it would provide more jobs. The land was owned by George Hand, a major Tucson saloonkeeper at the time, and he donated it, because it was considered worthless. The first graduating class had three students (two of them women, so progressive for the time). University High School (the citys best high school) was originally the prepartory school for the university.
Some of those nice houses Purple were originally meant as working class houses for workers on the Southern Pacific Railroad. That part of Fourth Avenue was named Pie Allen after a local wealthy baker, who carved the land up into the lots you see today.
I would love to live down there, but affording it? And the derelicts, one yesterday was walking the street, trying to hawk his transistor radio for food.

Maybe I'll take pictures at the Mission on Thursday as well and show everyone. Including one of a jewelry maker who is also a local actor. (Well, he is a Navajo, a little off his turf here).

Mike I LOVED the jewelry in Arizona,,,,,,,

I brought back quite a large wall sculptute, it comprises of leaves and Kingfishers.... can't believe i got it through customs as HAND LUAGAGE !!!!!! as the leaves are like little spears, made by local craftsmen, imagine metalic spears in my hand stuff and you can't take a small nail file!!!!!!! I had it wrapped in papers and a Coca cola plastic bag..... lol but there were a couple of takes at the X ray machine and nothing said!!!
it looks so good on my wall!!!!!!
ain't I a chancer???????? amazing what you can get away with wearing the DUMB tourist look.....
I got this whilst driving through the desert en route to Vegas and I can't remember the name of the area ahhhhhhh my memory these days!!!!! the shop was filled with jewlery and all sorts , very nice!!!!!!!

I emailed the webmaster Patty. Yes, the jewelry in this state is terrific. You can get all sorts of jewelry all over.
