If you want go to Naples, definitely read Neil Griffiths' Betrayal in Naples. It's a Graham Greene kind of literary thriller that raises all the big moral questions, yet will also have you dying for espresso, wine and pasta.

I dont know what websites youve been reading, but ive been to rome many times and theres no more beggers than anywhere else, just ignore em. And I visited venice in february for valentines day and it was beautiful and didnt smell at all. As for pick pockets,I always keep my wallet in my front pokcet and put my hand on it in busy places. but thats the same for london paris and other major cities but Ive never been pickpokcked or indeed felt particularly worried about it. Be aware but if you use a little common sense youll be fine.

The best way to outwit pickpockets is simply to a buy a body belt and wear it underneath yer trews I kid you not and it works.

My advise to anyone who is going to Rome, is to defiantly visit the Vatican City.

No holiday to Italy is complete without a visit to the Roman ruins

Stay in Praiano! Visit the Amalfi Coast - it is spectacular. Praiano is perched on the side of the cliffs - from the apartment to our car we had to climb up 157 steps every day but the view was incredible. And by the end of your stay you will have grown to love the labyrinth of steps up and down to the village (Via Rocco was a favourite - not) It'll sort your legs out! From here you can explore Paestum with its Greek temples and Pompeii.
Lovely lovely

I agree with dmpweb. I went to Italy this August for ten days (Rome, Venice, Florence). Venice is beautiful, Florence is more urban, but lovely. We stayed at a couple of nice hotels. You may want to try these--The Antico Doge in Venice and the Morgana Royal Court in Rome. The Antico Doge is my favorite. Check out the pictures for both on www.tripadvisor.com. These are very accurate. Also, the hotels are a few steps literally from two vaporetto stops in Venice, and the train station in Rome.

Thanks Marianne! I've spent the entire afternoon (ahem, working) looking for places to stay in Rome on tripadvisor (I love that website) - just checked out Morgana Royal Court. It looks lovely and at the right price too, and has some lovely reviews. I will let you know how the holiday went, should be going in December.
