Hello, Loretto, and welcome! Thanks for sharing the link to Michael Palin's interview, it was terrific.

Loretto, being an American, and always waiting for all things Palin and Python, I can tell you that you shouldn't hold your breath when it comes to booksignings, materials, travel series AND TV quest appearances here in The States.

His last in-depth booksigning tour was for his Hemingway series and companion book. He spent a great deal of time in the USA in many cities (lecturing and signing books with Basil Pao), not just NYC, Boston and LA. That was about 10 yrs. ago. His TV travel series aren't usually shown here when they are shown to the rest of the world and not always country-wide. He seldom makes guest appearances on USA TV and when he does, they are so short and the hosts don't do justice to him by asking interesting questions. He's like a little comma in a volume of encyclopedia.

It's sad to say, but Michael is, of course, much more popular and well-known in his native UK, OZ and Europe, I guess, due to the fact that Python was seen there from it's onset. We were exposed to Python and Michael much later, toward the end of the Flying Circus TV show success overseas. Although he is very popular with a certain fan base in the USA, it can't compare to the vast fan base around the world. I feel his agents and publishers are aware of that and realize long book tours and lectures here are not worth his time. I feel he was here for the extended time for Hemingway simply because it was an American about whom he wrote.

So I would just say, be very patient and hope the book comes along soon and be prepared to grab it quickly while they are available. I'd be very shocked if he does a book launch here. But if he does, he'll probably only visit a few major cities. BUT, lucky for you, NYC is just a hop, skip and a jump away for you. You might be able to catch him after all.

Thanks so much peripatetically, I think Cleese has cornered the market here. Sad really because I think there's far more to Micheal than there is to John Cleese. Both smart men and funny but I just admire Palin because he hasn't let it all go to his head. I do hope the book and himself makes it to NYC in 2010. If a book launch is on the cards I'll be on that NYC train at the crack of dawn. I think he's great to do all the things he has been doing at his age. Only hope I am energetic when I am 67 or so. Will you keep me posted if you hear of anything and I will do likewise for you. Will even get signed copy of book for you if he does make his way to NYC!!!

Sounds like a deal to me, Loretto! I'm sure we'll hear about it here on the web site if he schedules time in the USA.

Yes bIG but Cleese has made a lot of money, which I think has been his main motivation for a long time.

Trying to decide between Cleese and Palin is like trying to decide between apples and oranges. Both are absolutely wonderful in their own way. (Cleese is the orange and Palin is the apple.)

Cleese's current stage show is very similar to Palin's diaries. It's much more hard-edged but is very touching in many ways, especially about his relationship with his parents.

I don't know how you can claim, bIG b, that anyone who has produced so much has "squandered" his talents.
