Virginia Tech

Wow, early this morning a gunman went into the dorms at Virginia Tech and shot 30 people including himself. Please keep these people in your prayers. Why is there senseless violence like this in the world? |

I just returned from work 30 minutes ago and am watching the T.V news. It is hard to take in the magnitude of this atrocity. The whole of the U.S will be in shock, as indeed the rest of the world.Although I think America needs gun control, I don't know how they can ever prevent this sort of thing.
My sympathies to all of the U.S and to the bereaved and injured. |

I heard about it this morning when I was out. Good grief. As to why he did it, I have trouble caring about that. I am horrified that it happened.

I'm not sure I care why, either. It's horrible and horrors happen in human experience.
I am so sorry for the victims and their families.
I don't think it is possible to completely prevent this type of thing. It just happens. People snap. I hate for that to sound glib, I don't mean to be. A psychotic person goes on a rampage. What can you do?
Is it better that we "know" why a militant suicide bomber takes out 30 people?

The coverage, at least that which my mother-in-law is blasting through the house, is assinine.
Larry King just asked a witness, "Were you scared?" and another, "Do you want to continue going to Virginia Tech?"
Dr. Phil is all over the airwaves repeating this incorrect and idiotic statement: "When you send your children off to college, you expect them to be in a peaceful and safe environment." HUH? What is there, some sort of force field, some SDI technology employed over college campuses?
If they can't say something that helps right now, they should STFU.

Do you think all the incessant media coverage and muckraking makes these situations more frequent?

I'm afraid one of my thoughts last night was " will someone try to go one further".
We had this happen in Scotland, at Dunblane, and we don't have guns readily available. I don't have any answers but America needs to find some.
These atrocities must lead to collective anxiety about sending your kids to school/college. |

Its awful.
Dunblane was horrendously sad, Johnny - the victims were all so tiny (were they about 6 years old?). Of course that is not to say something like this isn't sad whether the victims are 2 or 92.
As you say, we don't have guns so readily available as the States, and these things happen still. Please don't let us get to the stage where we have to have armed guards at all our nurseries, schools, and colleges...
