Cutty Sark by perfectbitch on 21 May 2007 10:58am

For some reason, this awful news has thoroughly deflated me. It is believed to be the only surviving tea clipper which made only 8 voyages to Shanghai as steam ships took over the tea trade. It also made a record time for wind power by sailing from Australia to UK in 72 days.

The decks are desroyed but as it was undergoing restoration, some of the original timbers were beiing worked on elsewhere. However, there is a question of funding now. If there is an appeal, please try and contribute. I know there are worthier causes where people are suffering but it would be such a shame to lose such a slice of history.

The fire looks as if it might have caused extensive damage but a cover was being used and it may be that has taken most of the fire.
I've moved my model of the Cutty Sark down the garage where it is at less risk of fire damage!

I saw the news story. What a shame.

Re: Cutty Sark by Ellerd on 21 May 2007 3:27pm

It hasn't been completely totalled though, so hopefully it can be put back together again. As you say Linz, most of the original timber was away from the ship at the time, so most of it will still be authentic. I heard the fire is been treated as suspicious. Shame someone would want to destroy something like the Cutty Sark...

It's awful.

And another piece of (Midlands) news which I think just as shocking is that somebody blocked up an oxygen cylinder in a Birmingham hospital. When the nurses went to give oxygen to someone, it wouldn't work and they found a 'foreign body' had been stuffed into it.

I don't know what the world is coming to.

Devastating...

Fortunately, restoration will ensure that this fine vessel is restored to its former glory.

The individual(s) that committed this appalling crime should be shot.

They just HAVE TO repair it! MP hasn't sailed on it yet.

When they spend the £30,000,000 that is the estimate for repair, it should be brought back to the Clyde.........where it was built.

I saw it when I was a child and also last year, it was fantastic this is such sad news. I'm glad the figurehead wasn't destroyed tho.

Johnny why should it be relocated?

Re: Cutty Sark by johnnythemonkey on 22 May 2007 11:40am

Why should'nt it be relocated ? It will probably be repaired with taxpayers money , in one guise or the other. It was built in Dumbarton on the river Clyde, where most of the great liners were built. Since most of the jobs in ship-building are long gone, the tourist cash would be a welcome boost to the area; something that Londonistan hardly needs.
