If anyone is interested, there is a bonus DVD on the latest copy of the movie, and there is a lot of good stuff about Michael on it.

John Cleese talks about how he knew Michael Palin would be in the movie, really before he developed the Ken character, and MP talks about making the movie, etc. It is just a nice documentary about the making of the film.
It seems that the whole concept was pretty risky for them, and they had to change a bit of the film to tone down the animal violence, and add a love story so as to make Wanda, (the woman, not the fish), more likable. This was based upon test audience reactions in both the US and UK.

It is funny how people don't mind seeing humans killed in movies, but hate to see an animal injured. I feel the same way myself.

The old lady in AFCW was a cartoon--one of those annoying, cranky, old biddies we might secretly harbor brief murderous fantasies about.

The dogs were cute, even if one of them did bite Ken.

JC's original vision for the film was very dark. It was going to end with him and Wanda on the plane, reclining in their seats, but with the camera closing in on her shark fin shoes (dorsal fins on the tops), so you knew she'd reeled in another sucker. But it went over so badly in previews that Crichton suggested the love story angle, and Cleese rewrote it. I'm so glad he did--it's still one of my favorite movies. I didn't like Michael's perm, though.

Oh, I've seen that. That documentary is on youtube. If it's the same we're talking about. We see how they hung John out of the window and how they shot Michael comming down with the bags on that...thingy

Oh yes, is it the same documentary that is on YouTube ? It's kind of... very sweet. Very very sweet. I'm kind of... huge fan of the movie, I am. I'm not kind of... you know... ashamed of that. I got DVD with JC's commentary on it, really enjoyable.
