The Lost World of Tibet by suzulu on 3 March 2008 1:56am

The Lost World of Tibet, documentary on Channel 4 on Monday 3 March at 10 p.m.

"Dan Cruickshank tells the story of Tibet in the decades leading up to the Chinese invasion, when polygamous, aristocrat families ran the country's semi-feudal system, and 20 per cent of the nation's males were monks.

Because China bans talk of Tibetan independence in territory it controls, Cruickshank made his film in India - the adopted home of the Dalai Lama since he escaped from Tibet in 1959, where he is now interviewed.

The 14th Dalai Lama, enthroned in 1940 when he was five years old, spills out intimate memories of his childhood and hs family. He even admits to bullying his older brother, who was sent to the same monastery for Buddhist monk training. Best of all, his storytelling is set to rare colour footage from the '30s through to the '50s."

Should be interesting.

Yes it should be Sue. I am always interested in things on Tibet. You are right. To the Chinese, there is nothing to discuss about Tibetan independence and it is too late anyway.

Fascinating (although I have my doubts about Cruikshank, some of his stories in "80 treasures" got dirty....but he's a good historian.)

I read "Seven years in Tibet" book when I was in high school, and I found it really interesting. Hopefully this program will be on TV here.

Sorry, folks, the programme is on BBC4 not Channel 4! It's a shame that I don't have BBC4!
