Michael censured by Wild in Africa on 5 August 2008 12:48pm

Sure this will upset a lot of people here.
In today's UK press a report that an episode from New Europe has been censured by the BBC's Governing body for being 'more of a political commentary than a travel show and included an innaccurate account of the Balkan wars of the 1990s'. It was the episode 'The War and the Peace' about the former Yugoslavia.
Even our nice Michael can get his knuckles rapped from time to time.

Me, I'm off to Africa for a month from tomorrow. Be seeing you.

have a good time. And be good to our animals. They are priceless.

What? That's ridiculous! I don't know that much about the Balkan wars, so I probably wouldn't even have noticed anyway, in fact I may have learned something.

Enjoy your trip to Africa.

The blackguards!

I've never seen the episode in question, but I gather most here disagree with the BBC's take on it.

Enjoy the holiday, WiA.

Oh, the BBC - most of the time they get it right but they do bend over backwards to satisfy accusations of bias (I suppose that's a fault on the right side, really)- so they struggle very hard to seem impartial.

Personally, I don't remember anything contentious in his Balkan-wars account: like most of us, I'm happy to believe he goes out of his way NOT to be too 'political', without compromising a 'decent human being' approach (if uou see what i mean).
Someone with a vested interest will have complained to the BBC.

Here's the BBC's version of the controversy:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7540993.stm

Apparently, "one viewer" complained. Heavens, I thought the BBC had more guts than to grovel in front of one viewer - must have been a pretty powerful viewer. Having been through censorship wars in the U.S. numerous times, I'd expect this of an American commercial network but there always has seemed to be more latitude on the BBC.

Here's a another take with a bit more of the background http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/harry_de_quetteville/blog/2008/08/06/karadzic_in_the_hague_the_balkan_blame_game

It was the BBC being overly PC. New Europe is a travel show, for goodness sake!
One person? Probably the Serb ambassador to the U.K.

Why mention this now, 9 or 10 months after the series was first shown?
