Speaking about China. by tucsonmike on 7 August 2008 5:32am

A Toastmasters colleague has a talk show on Access Tucson. I got to speak about China tonight on it. I had never been on, except for TV Toastmasters, so I enjoyed it.
I am ready for the Olympics.

Glad it went well and that you enjoyed it! Were you nervous?

Well done Mike!
I am not watching any of the Olympics. None at all.

I was a little nervous, but once I got going, I was fine.
Karen, why aren't you watching the Olympics?

Re: Speaking about China. by kazzzz on 7 August 2008 1:50pm

A small protest towards China, Mike. I am utterly disgusted with their treatment of people. Recently I saw an article about how the government are pulling down ramshackle homes because they are not pleasing to the Western eye of the media. They are also walling in communities because they are an eyesore, apparently. People are being turned out of their own homes all for a sporting event. And that's just for starters.

I'm with you all the way, Kazzzz.

I love the Olympics but I don't feel I want to watch it either.

That's it Anne, I love the Olympics too I am really saddened to not be watching but I just don't feel right about it. It won't make any difference in the scheme of things but whatever you can do no matter how small must count for something.

Because of course the UK and US have never done and never do unspeakable things do they? Presumably anyone boycotting the Beijing games will also be boycotting London 2012?

Re: Speaking about China. by Spursfan on 7 August 2008 7:13pm

They'd better not or they'll have ME to answer to, lol!

But seriously, no-one is saying that the UK is perfect. [Kazzzz is Australian btw not American]. But as far as I am aware, we are not doing the things stated in Kazzzz's post !! Great chunks of London are not being walled in (or haven't they told us yet?!!).

But worst of all is China's human rights record. I am going to let Wikipedia (I know it not always accurate) speak for me on this one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_rights_in_the_People's_Republic_of_China

Basically, I am saying before you make flippant remarks get your facts straight.

I'm going to ignore the issue here in the hope that the Olympics are a success because when they are then it will prove China, with its population of over 1.3 billion people of whom 69,000 have been killed in the Scechuan province earthquakes recently, has coped with a world class event even with all the protests. This can only be good for the country.
