Shangrila by RKLGlasgow on 15 August 2008 1:06pm

I loved the Himalaya series, and must admit to being jealous of Mr Palin for that journey/series in particular. It also became a "must do before I die" ambition to visit Shangrila/Shambala in it's stunning, hidden, valley. I don't even hill climb, though not badly out of shape. What preperation must I do for that trip not to be suicidal, and can anyone reccomend books/travel companies that may help, even as a starting point?

Hi RKL...Ian Baker's The Heart of the World might help...he lead the expedition that explored a good portion of the Tsangpo and Po Sangpo rivers. You may want to check into Lonely Planet's Tibet guide. Caveat: The tone of the book made me wonder if the author was trying to scare people away, if he was just being honest about potential pitfalls, or never quite grew out of the colic stage. I have a couple of other ideas for books (I love to read about travel to the Himalayas while wrapped up in my blankies or down comforter) and will get the important info such as titles and author posted in next day or two.

Cheers for that, the two of you who took time to reply. It will be next summer before I have time for a trip anywhere so news will be slow in coming, but I will let you know how it turns out.

Hi RKL...one of the books in my last post is entitled Lost Mountain...but heck if I can remember the author or the other book. You also might want to check into Margo Chisholm's To the Summit--she used mountain climbing as part of her recovery from some rather nasty issues. I love books, and it's my pleasure!

Nanda Devi...that's the other book I couldn't remember.
