ev:how come you're such a clever chap? Can't you stop these 'scientific' nerds from putting paid to our planet earth in the spurious name of 'science'?

I'd be more concerned about asteroid impact.

Here's a list from Harvard of "Forthcoming Close Approaches To The Earth". The nearest one seems to be in April 2029, at a nail-biting distance of only 34,000 km (only one-tenth of the distance to the moon):

Fortunately there are some clever clogs trying to come up with deflection strategies for dangerous asteroids:

Here's more info about the 2029 asteroid. Apparently there's a very low chance of impact but experts are keeping an eye on it..:

And how many people know about this??:

"On March 22, 1989 the 300 metre (1,000 ft) diameter Apollo asteroid 4581 Asclepius (1989 FC) missed the Earth by 700,000 kilometres (400,000 miles) passing through the exact position where the Earth was only six hours before. If the asteroid had impacted it would have created the largest explosion on Earth in recorded history."

And I'll be in Pittsburgh! Not exactly where I expected to spend my final days.

I wouldn't worry the 2029 asteroid, since Mayas calculated that the world will end in December 2012. That makes me worried, since Mayas were very, very good at calculating things...
