Some statistics from Australia:

3 Aussies die each year testing if a 9v battery works on their tongue.

58 Aussies are injured each year by using sharp knives instead of

31 Aussies have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while the
fairy lights were plugged in.

8 Aussies had serious burns in 2000 trying on a new jumper with a lit
cigarette in their mouth.

A massive 543 Aussies were admitted to Emergency in the last two years after
opening bottles of beer with their teeth.

So there you go.. smartest country on Earth..

The one about the beer caps is particularly surprising, since we use twist tops!

In the last 50 years there have been 61 deaths in Australian waters from shark attack, most of them either off Queensland or South Australia. Therefore looking at the above statistics there is probably a greater risk of injury from opening a bottle of beer with your teeth.

Here's another interesting fact - the average number of snakebite deaths per year in Australia is only 1.8! Ok let's round that up to 2.. but the point is more die from testing 9V batteries with their tongues than from 'Australia's deadly reptiles'..!
Re: Australian statistics by kazzzz on 27 September 2008 12:58pm
I don't believe that, no WAY are there only two fatal snakebites per year.

The 'Cairns Post'(Cairns/North Queensland/Great Barrier Reef) has a story from May,2008,when a roadside lunchstop nearly proved deadly for a tourist outside the town of Laura. The Australian deadly brown snake slithered between the man's legs and made a lunge for his manhood, biting the end of his Peenis(not biting OFF the end,I should add).He was attended by paramedics who had to check he hadn't been poisoned, and was taken to Cooktown Hospital for closer examination where he was given the all-clear.
