Paul Newman dies with dignity:tributes pour in by bIG bLOGGER on 28 September 2008 2:43pm
The American film actor,Paul Newman, who appeared in over 60 films, has died aged 83 at his farmhouse in Westport,Connecticut. He was born in Cleveland,Ohio,in 1925.
I think my favourite Newman films are : "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid",made in 1969,based on Butch Cassidy's 'Wild Bunch',a loosely-organised outlaw gang which operated out of Hole-In-The-Wall,Wyoming,where Newman co-starred with Robert Redford and Katharine Ross;
and :"Exodus".This film, which starred Newman was produced and directed by Otto Preminger, made in 1960,with stirring music by Ernest Gold,a script by Dalton Trumbo, and shot entirely on location in Cyprus and Israel. It was based on the epic Leon Uris novel about the desperate search of the Jews for a Homeland.
Paul Newman was a great movie actor, car racing enthusiast, philanthropist, and husband of Joanne Woodward.

Those piercing blue eyes have closed forever. One of the last "film stars" of an earlier age.

And he donated over $250,000,000.00 to charity from his "Newman's Own" food sales. Truly incredible. (I hardly ever buy brand name prepared foodstuffs except for "Newman's Own".) And he was a world class race car driver; once came in second at Le Mans.

I grew up watching his movies at the theaters and he was actually my first true heart throb ever. Sigh. I guess I've probably seen every movie he's ever made, many many many times over. Just no words for how it makes me feel that he has gone. A wonderful person, for sure. Certainly a sad time for his admirerers.

He was, by all reports, a really nice guy who loved to help people in all sorts of ways. He founded the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang camp for children with cancer and other serious illnesses and conditions. It provides a camping experience of the highest quality, while extending year-round support to their families and health care providers. (Lovingly ripped off from the website, http://www5.holeinthewallgang.org/default.html
The camp and its affiliates serve over 1000 children each summer.

He did a lot of work gratis here in CT, including narrating a DVD for the CT Fund for the Environment earlier this year, when he was ill.

RIP, Mr. Newman.

I was so sad to hear of this news. I liked his films, especially Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Sting. Oh, those blue eyes!

Rest in peace, Paul!

I think I'll re-watch "The Sting" on DVD tonight in memory of him. A truly wonderful actor and humanitarian. He will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace.

belatedly, I'm joining wholeheartedly in these heartfelt tributes.

Without quite knowing why, I loved that man. he just was a good man. And such movies and acting! Yes, Patty, I too have seen many (though not like you, all) and knew about Newman's Own (though not his other huge philanthropic activities).

In my newspaper this morning is a story of his giving $20,000 to a cancer clinic in Swansea, where his son-in-law's mother Sue had been treated.

The morning it was announced in UK more than newspaper just filled their front page with a bic colour photo of him. Says it all.
