how nuts is this? by mrsteabag on 28 November 2008 7:07pm

Now, for those of you in the UK and other relatively sane places, we have a little tradition here in the states called Black Friday. It's the day after Thanksgiving. Stores open ridiculously early and offer some serious discounts. The problem is that people get seriously hurt. AP News just reported that an associate at a Wal-Mart in New York state died of injuries sustained when the doors opened and the crowds rushed in to get their super discounted flat screen tv's. I don't know what makes me more heartsick, that people are that greed driven that this happens or the situation in Mumbai.

I think the world went mad some time ago mrsteabag. Some situations make it hard to see any humour - if you know what I mean.

Both situations are a depressing note about human nature.

I know, it's 2008, when will civilization finally really take hold? I also heard there was shooting in a "Toys R Us." I hope it wasn't over a "tickle-me-Elmo"...

Another Wal*Mart associate from the same store said that when she and other staff and management tried to get the customers out so they could deal with the dying employee, the customers refused to leave! "I've been in line since yesterday morning!" one customer yelled at her.

Something like this happens almost every Black Friday. I'd like to blame it on the economy, but that doesn't explain what happened the year Wal*Mart sold DVDs for $20 (2 dead, more than a dozen injured).

Something I read recently said that someone asked Ghandi what he thought of Western civilization, and he responded, "I think it's a very good idea." I wish we'd made some progress since then.

Yes, that's a great Ghandi quote. :)

Some people are still acting like wild animals, I'm afraid.

Blimey, even wild animals aren't crazy enough to go stampeding into Walmart to get their paws on the latest discount-price DVD's!!

mrsthing:There are some really good 'Gandhi' quotes... Check these out:

"An ounce of practice is worth a ton of preaching".
"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind".
"Nobody can hurt me without my permission"
"Be the change you want to see in the world"...
(I think Barack Obama's been reading that last one!)

I don't usually go shopping on Black Friday because people are so crazy then. They were fairly subdued at the couple of stores I went to, but some were incredibly rude, too. Even the people on the sidewalks were rude! You'd think, with all those fantastic sales, and gas prices down now by more than $2.50 (today's price: $1.82/gallon. 4 months ago it was $4.39!), they'd all be in good spirits. But they were all crabby, dragging their crying toddlers around by one arm and threatening the older kids. Honestly--all that crowding and visual stimulation is too much for toddlers and little ones. If they have to bring the kids along, they could at least have a little sympathy for them.

Online shopping looks better and better as the years go by!

Here's my favorite Ghandi quote:

The Seven Deadly Sins that will destroy us are:
Knowledge without character.
Business without morality.
Science without humanity.
Worship without sacrifice.
Pleasure without conscience.
Politics without principle.
Wealth without work.

I never shop on that day. Almost everybody is off work and out of school. Just way too crowded for me. I'm not THAT desperate to save a few dollars anyway.

Besides, I'm usually done or nearly done by then anyway.
