The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Britz by tucsonmike on 3 December 2008 3:48am
This was a two part series Sunday night and last night on BBC America.

It is about two British Moslem siblings. One joins MI5, the other becomes radicalized.

Many of the Moslem kids seemed to live in a sort of netherworld. The young man who joined MI5 felt the U.K. took them in from Pakistan and he owed Britain a debt of honor. The young woman saw Britain as racist and was not proud to be British.

Now, being American, I am not sure what Moslems in the U.K. face. They seemed to be portrayed as being between two worlds. Considered British in Pakistan and not really considered British in the U.K.
I felt sympathy for the male character but not for the others. (They would hate me anyway). The end of the show gave statistics about British Moslems being angry at Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel.
Then, it is only what I can see as an American, not knowing enough and reacting to what I see.

The series is powerful and well done, no question. Also timely.
When BBC America showed it, they did not realize just HOW timely.

'portrayed' is about right, Mike: it IS a drama.

From the ground, everyone gets on with everyone- will be some exceptions, but not hugely. No hassle where I live. After 7/7 everyone went out of their way to be nice to people of 'other' cultures, all races did this.

And, remember - lies, damned lies, and statistics.
