The Prisoner (Patrick McGoohan) by perfectbitch on 14 January 2009 11:00pm
The actor died today. "The Prisoner" was a classic series. A few years ago, I visited Port Merion where it was filmed. It's a delightful village but highly commercialised. However, the buildings are beautiful and quirky and worth a visit if you get the chance.

Sorry to hear that. There was nothing on the BBC news at 10pm this evening about it.
I never understood 'The Prisoner', I was probably too young. Did anyone understand it though ? I remember him in 'Danger Man' and that is going back a bit ! A fine actor and very successful in the States where many others failed to make it.

Yes I remember him in Danger Man - I connect him with that rather than the Prisoner. Though I did enjoy that too.

Weird though. How come he was Number 6 AND Number 1 (or whatever)? !!

I don't think even the writers, directors or cast understood it Johnny. I once knew someone who was a big fan of the show and joined the "fan club" - which, from the little I read in their leaflets, seemed to be a fusion of surrealism, existentialism and bull***t. It was good fun at the time but seems crass and dated now.

The village was the star of the show.

Ricardo Montalban died also today. Not sure how old he was, must've been in his 80's I'd say.

Sorry to hear about Patrick McGoohan. Montalban was 88.

No more "Corinthian Leather Seats, What have they done to my car, and Welcome to Fantasy Island."

Sorry to hear about Patrick McGoohan.

Port Meirion is a place where I have been meaning to visit - haven't done so yet. I love the pottery.

"Danger Man" was called "Secret Agent" in the U.S. at a time when we had next to no British programs here (except for "The Avengers") and it had that great title song.

I loved "The Prisoner". I need to rent it from Netflix and see it again. There have been many explanations about it but McGoohan never gave us his as far as I know. My opinion was that the secret agent had had a psychic break from all the stress and descended into schizophrenia and the village was an insane asylum. There were so many places where #6 came across other versions of himself and it made the last episode make sense (to me, at least.)

McGoohan will be missed.

Yes, indeed RIP McGoohan & Montalbran.

Port Meirion is LOVELY, Sue - it will remind you of a stage set. It was pouring wet when we were there, no-one else, an interesting perspective! - not a real place, but a lovely one.

THE PRISONER< Yes, I anjoyed without understanding the angst shown in the programmes. Newspaper obits say the programme was his own devising & pften scriptwritten & directed too. he seems to have thought the real meaning was 'stress and angst are in you all the time & you are a prisoner of yourself '- no, I don't understand that either.

Geraldine, you'd have liked the guy. Apparently he was a famous non-compromiser with his work - left England because of it, worked in US, writing and directing. True to himself - and still working - to the end, I believe.

He came to Hollywood in order to not compromise?!! He must have had better experiences there than I did. Maybe he got away with things because of his accent. Much of Hollywood will accept almost anything if it's said with a Brit accent. lol
