Anyone feel like talking about Star Trek? by canaveralgumby on 16 May 2009 9:19pm

Anyone see it? Thoughts?? Let's be courteous and say SPOILER ALERT when we have one.

My humble opinion: I thought it was good-to-excellent. B+ to A-. The casting director ought to get an award. To a person, the actors were superb. My favorite was the actor who played Dr. McCoy.

SPOILER ALERT

I had been writing a bit of fan fiction, maybe will pick it up again sometime. I went to the Simon & Schuster website. They have a special link just for writers who want to submit Trek stories. One of the first rules is, no time travel in your story. Funny that, because the last several Trek movies have relied on time travel as a device. The new one, no exception. So I'm a little peeved at that! We amateurs are supposed to be creative enough to come up with interesting ideas not using that device, but the paid professionals get to use it?! One can untangle oneself from any internal logic problems very conviently by having a character decide to time travel back and fix something. It's cheap, easy and overdone.

They even had the characters DISCUSS how it was cheating!

I want better, no time travel, no clones.

As you guys know, I'm a fan of Star Trek. i could chat about it all you want. The film was just awesome. I loved it! The comment about Johnathan Archer's dog was really funny. I was a bit worried that because it was going back to the Kirk Academy days and didn't have the well known cast in it (Patrick Stewart, et al)that it may fall flat. I was thrilled to be proved wrong.

I skipped the spoiler, Cori. I am looking forward to seeing it.
Mr. Teabag finally got to see "...Tribbles" last week. It's my all time favorite episode from the original series. My favorite line of the movies: "If I were human, I believe my response would be, 'go to hell.'" Mr. Spock on the orders to bring the Enterprise home.

I've got that .wav file on my p.c.! You're a woman after my own heart!

Terry, I have a 22-yr-old son (I have no idea your age). For THAT reason, I am aware that 3 of the actors are well-known by the whipper-snappers. The producers are wisely going after that demographic. John Cho [Sulu] is from "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle." Simon Pegg [Scotty] was in "Shaun of the Dead."

Zachary Quinto [Spock] -- coolest set of initials EVER! -- is a star of the tv show "Heroes." I've never watched "Heroes." It's my understanding that a Trekkie like myself would like it. Don't know why I haven't watched it. Must be on against "Deadliest Catch" or something.

I like Star Trek and was glad when Virgin 1 started showing The Next Generation on Freeview again recently.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new movie sometime. The clips/reviews I've seen look good.

Hi,Canavar!

To answer your query: I'll be 41 next March 25th. And yes, I'm sure anyone would love Heroes whether they are sci-fi fans or not. My fiance and I love the thing. My favourite characters are Hiro and Ando. And my fiance thinks Claire and Hiro are cool. And as a matter of interest, George Takai (the original Sulu in Star Trek - TOS was Hiro's dad in Heroes.

I have to admit, I've not seen any of them! OR the telly series. I don't really know why I never have, maybe I'll have a peek at this new movie.
I'm more of a Dr Who gal.

Enjoyed the movie even though I grew up with the original. Confused a bit though about the new alternative universe created in this one where Vulcan no longer exists and Ma Spock is dead. Will they now build an entirely new future history around this alternative? Do agree that Zachary Qunto is ideal as the new Spock.

You and me both, Kazz. but I prefer the old Dr who stuff. My favourite actor (other than Michael) is Peter Davison, so I loved his Dr Who stuff. And quite liked Colin, Baker, too.

Bizarre Terry! Those two Doctors are usually the least favourite amongst fans (apart from Sylvestor McCoy about whom the less said the better) with usually Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee being up among the favourities of Doctors of old.
