(Duck) Islands In The Storm (with apologies to Dolly and Kenny) by bIG bLOGGER on 21 May 2009 4:31pm

Duck Islands (ducks included) are the latest sensation in the now 14-day-long-running saga of The Daily Telegraph's sensational revelations about British M.P.'s expense-claim fiddles.

The Conservative MP for Gosport (Hampshire),Sir Peter Viggers, has offered his resignation today after he claimed on his expenses for an ornamental Swedish duck island.
Douglas Hogg, who claimed for the cleaning out of his country mansion's moat, should perhaps consider his own position.

HaHaHa,Peter. D. Hogg is indeed standing down at next election - P.Viggers is, now (as you say) & some others I forget. I wouldn't bank on H. Blears surviving as an MP, either.

Chris (Lord) Rennard says he's resigning his post ( Lords Lib Dem leader & genius election fixer) soon 'for health reasons'. Well, he's certainly built like a brick s**thouse so you can believe that but there are also mutters about expenses.
Serves the expense-excess-ers right.

This expenses business has got sillier and sillier.

suzulu: I agree with you,of course,it has got really silly.
But if you watched the last 2 editions of BBCTV's QUESTION TIME,there is evidently a lot of anger festering up and down the country because not only were Ben Bradshaw,M.P.and Margaret Beckett,M.P. heckled and shouted at by the audience, but up to 200 of our 'honourable'(?) Members of Parliament have been claiming for trifles which are unnecessary for their work as MP's,in other words extravagancies and luxuries such as the proverbial duck island.

I meant it has got really silly about what these MPs are putting on their expenses. What a nerve they have, spending taxpayers' money.

I didn't see the last 2 editions of Question Time. Wish I had.

e too, Sue & Peter: but I heard 'Any Questions' and 'Any Answers'yesterday & they were gems. probably saying the sort of things as on TV.

Husband & I went to the Gay Hussar in London for a lunch recently. You see, we KNEW we'd paid off our mortgage.

What we've heard so far has just been a 'trailer'. I think the 'main feature' has still be shown. Most of the revelations have been about second home claims which, no matter how much fraud is involved, can 'only' amount to about £20,000-24,000.
They are paid £65,000 per annum yet the total cost of each of them is nearer £250,000. The rest is made of of office running costs, staffing costs, travelling costs and 'incidental expenses'.
We already know that many of them 'employ' family members and their 'offices' are sometimes a garage attached to the houses that we are already paying for.
It will be shown that over the four years, 2004-2008, that many of them have 'earned' £1,000,000+ not even counting profits from sales of property bought at our expense.
Lots of people in this country would like to see some of them swinging from lamposts. I'd settle for seeing them jailed but I won't hold my breath.

It's a very confusing situation. New Rules are currently being drawn up,which will mean M.P.'s won't in future be able to claim for some of the things they have been claiming for up to now.

I'm still musing over some of the things which were claimed for, which would be funny were the taxpayers not so annoyed about it; for example:

John Prescott(Lab,Kingston-upon-Hull East) claimed for decorative mock Tudor beams for his Hull mansion.
Total claim (07-08):£141,644.

David Heathcoat-Amory(Con,Wells) made 19 claims (totalling £400) for 550 bags of manure.
Total claim (07-08):£136,839.

Austin Mitchell(Lab,Great Grimsby) claimed for sundries including 0.67pence for Ginger Crinkle biscuits and 0.68pence for 1 jar of Branston pickle.
Total claim (07-08):£155,956.

James Arbuthnot(Con,North East Hants) claimed for maintenance of swimming pool.He has offered to repay the amount.
Total claim (07-08): £146,192.

Alan Duncan (Con,Rutland and Melton)claimed £5,000 for gardening maintenance costs including £600 for a ride-on lawn mower and gardener's salary. He has paid it back.
Total claim (07-08):£148,448.

Douglas Hogg (Con,Sleaford and North Hykeham) claimed for the cleaning of his mansion's moat.He will stand down.
Total claim (07-08):£127,902.

Margaret Moran (Lab,Luton South) claimed thousands of pounds for decorating 3 separate properties, including £22,500 for dry rot treatment.
Total claim (07-08):£160,467.

Anthony Steen (Con,Totnes,Devon) spent £87,729 on his second home (country mansion) mostly for forestry experts/the clearance of trees/protection of his shrubs against incursions by rabbits. He claimed he didn't know what all the fuss was about and that people were just "jealous" that he owned a large country property.
Total claim (07-08):£160,957.

...and these are just a small sample of the more egregious expense claims.
