The Pedantic Twat thread. by johnnythemonkey on 6 June 2009 8:09pm

Post your petty gripes about errant apostrophe's etc here and give the rest of us a wink of peace.
You can put an asterisk on the offending thread and type ' See Pedantic twat thread.'

( No twat don't start with the one in my 'apostrophe's ' )

I hate it when people talk about 'train stations' as in 'I'm off to the train station'.

It's RAILWAY station for $£&*%$'s sake!!!

:O

Oh, I see ! The next time I'll say, " I'm off to the station darling, to catch a railway to Glasgow. "

* Out pedanted Queen Pedant. *

Hope that was'nt negative or cynical. Or twisted. Or manipulating the facts to suit my horrible personality.

Not that I'm talking to you (as you know) but...

You would say in your example above:

'I'm off to the station to catch a train to Glasgow'

BUT if you weren't going to say anything about the particular train, you should say 'I'm off to the railway station, darling'.

She might think I'm going to the omnibus station.

Wow I've never heard anyone complain about 'train station' before..! I say it all the time. Probably because it has one less syllable.

By the way Johnny, in your first post on this thread, 'Twat' should be capitalised.

Yes I noticed that as I typed ev but that's why I differ from you.

Re: The Pedantic Twat thread. by ev on 6 June 2009 9:20pm

Well this IS meant to be the Pedantic Twat room, isn't it? Or did you come here for an argument?

Re: The Pedantic Twat thread. by johnnythemonkey on 6 June 2009 9:22pm

Funny you should say that. There seems to be arguments everywhere I go. I guess I hang around the wrong places.

Why would she? (Still not talking to you though)

Surely in that case you would have said 'I'm off to the Bus Station'? Or 'I'm off to catch a bus to Glasgow'?

Ev - yes it really grates on my nerves !!
