Interest in Africa. by tucsonmike on 19 June 2009 4:32am

This is recent. I have been watching Expedition Africa on History Channel, where they are recreating Stanley's expedition to find Dr. Livingstone.

All the writing help I've been giving African refugees has helped this interest. Rian Malan and Stanley both said, Africa changes you.

I have only been in Johannesburg and Pretoria, which I assume are not representative of most of Africa.

I know the "control" part of my personality wants to see if I can control the tough parts of Africa and be disciplined.

I certainly cannot see going now, because of economics. Maybe, maybe not, but I no long plan far in advance.

I will post a review when I am done, I am reading Dead Aid, by Zambian economist Dambisa Moyo.

Hi Mike. Always known you had your foot in the door (re: Africa) especially with your engagement with the Sudanese Lost Boys. Africa can delight and can annoy and frustrate, like any love affair can both enchant and drive you mad. How do you mean' control' the tough parts of Africa? I think Africa is more likely to be the controller in such a relationship!
Dambisa Moyo has quite a radical take on aid to Africa and while correct in parts, do not agree with her really radical opinions on the overall uselessness of aid to Africa.

Thanks for the response! Not sure I can "control" Africa, bet. tsetse flies, etc.

Tomorrow, my Rwandan partner in crime and I are going to an Alliance Francaise event for African speaking refugees.

Mike, from what I see, airfares from the US are pretty reasonable now. it's easier for Americans to travel this year than it has been in the last several. Of course, the deals are out there, you just have to spend some time finding them. (Not sure Africa is included.)
