Sir Michael Palin - who's with me?? by LeoLouise on 31 October 2009 8:07pm

Who's willing to start a petition to get Michael knighted - Sir Michael Palin has a good ring to it dont you think?

For not only being a wonderful person but a comic genius (Monty Python, Ripping Yarns) his contribution to British Cinema (Python films and The Missionary) his shared knowledge and representation of the world, the Michael Palin Stammering Centre, his books, novels etc etc etc etc....

Let's make it happen!! :-)

Yours truly
LL

Well, yes I agree out of many celebs he deserves it BUT...

My husband and I (ooops sorry didn't mean to sound like the OTHER Liz - for those of you who don't know I am ELIZABETH Anne, oh well never mind...) both agree that people should NOT be rewarded for just doing their job, i.e. chairmen of industry, pop stars, actors etc. The only exceptions should be those who risk their life for others in the line of duty, e.g. paramedics, firemen.

People who spend their spare time doing work for others needier than themselves are far more deserving than someone who is paid to perform or who runs a national company.

But that is only my humble opinion.

:(

Well, Michael does deserve it but would he want to be knighted?

Anne, do any of these people who help the needy ever get knighted, I wonder?

I have no idea how the knighthood works, is it by public vote or election or is it done by the powers that be?

Anne, your statement is contradictory. You say that people shouldn't be rewarded for just doing their jobs yet say that firemen or paramedics who risk their lives should be an exception. Isn't that their job ? There have been enough examples recently of such people NOT doing their job. Paramedics that can't be disturbed because they are on a tea break etc.

I have my opinions of the honours system but compared to those who have received knighthoods, yes Michael does deserve any recognition that may come his way.
It would be even worse if Cleese got recognised ! Now there is a prat !

If you read my 'piece' properly, Johnny you will see that I put "who risk their life for others in the line of duty, e.g. paramedics, firemen.".

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough for you but what I meant was individual paramedics and firemen who had put their life on the line for some reason - going into a burning building to save someone, for example. Not just for BEING a fireman!!

I agree with both Spursfan and Jonny.

In some cases there are a few undeserving celebs who are knighted and for no real reason, and yes for just doing their job.

However I do also agree that those saving lives etc are also "just doing their job" its the nature of the job but I do think people like this need recognition also. There are some much more deserving people in the world who deserve recognition more than those in the entertainment field.

However, this does not change my views on Michael deserving such recognition, if I could it would be SIR MONTY PTYHON but i doubt thats possible....although i am now tempted to try....

If we were to try and get Mike knighted I will need a few letters of support so anyone interested, email me, [email protected]

PEACE!!

Sorry - I shall not be backing your petition, Lynda-Louise, for the reasons stated.

However, best wishes in your attempt, even though (for honourable reasons) I hope you fail!

Even though Michael didn't risk his life in the line of duty (and btw, Anne, I agree, the people you talked about are true heroes and should be rewarded), he still contributed to enlighten people about the world around us, he's doing a lot to get viewers and readers to know new countries, new cultures, and I guess that, in our world, this is a major contribution. Ignorance of the other's culture leads to fear of the other and fear can't be any good to anything.
Michael isn't a hero, I agree, and I understand the reasons you stated, Anne, but the efforts he put in travelling around and open people's minds, even just a little bit, is sensationnal to me.

Well... I'm not British, so I can't really say anything, but if he ever gets a "sir" in front of his name, I hope he doesn't get it for dressing up like old ladies.
Or, let's say, he doesn't get it just for that. ;)
