The Chatter Box : Blathering On
For the cat people here: by TERRY S on 31 January 2010 11:49pm
Can anyone tell me how to wean Emony from the litter tray to outside? He has learned to ask to go out, but comes back in and THEN uses his tray I need him to understand that outside is the place for it.

I suppose you could slowly move the litter tray closer and closer to the back door and then put it outside - but then he may STILL go on the tray, but outside!! Perhaps not letting him back in until he has 'performed'? Generally, the longer he stays outside each time the more likely he is to do 'it' outside!!

We had our two present cats from a young lady who rescues animals (mainly cats I think) and she used normal soil (i.e. earth) in her cat trays, to save money I guess. Trouble was, we had TERRIBLE problems getting Ebru to use our cat tray - she was forever going in the plant pots, as she was used to the soil!! We had to put prickles in the soil so she wouldn't use them.

Now she mostly uses the tray if she's in (as she's had meningitis she has had to stay in since before Xmas - much better now and longing to go out but still under the vet so in she stays!!) but on the odd rare occasion she has been known to do it still!!

With Tosun we bought these big pads that look like giant disposable nappies. We would put one down in the lounge and if he looked as if he was squatting, we would pick him up and put him on the pad. Eventually he got the idea and then we'd move it slowly towards the backdoor. (I can still remember taking him out to do a wee in the snow - poor little mite!!).

Now he is really good and has NEVER done anything in the house. And he will do his, er, business, if I say 'bizzy' which I taught him when little.

I'm not suggesting you get a pad for Emony by the way (!)

Sorry I couldn't help more. Good luck and love to Emony.
