Palestinians. by tucsonmike on 29 January 2013 5:23pm

I know there are no such thing as Palestinians as an ethnic group. There are Arabs in Palestine. Palestine is a place.

Essentially, yes the idea of a unique ethnic group called Palestinians is a fantasy creation of recent years. However, this does not mean there were not people already living in the land for centuries who had their own post Ottoman Empire nationalist ambitions for the areas as well.

Godfather, thank you for not telling me I am a fascist. The perfect world, which will never happen would be a U.N. run region to cover Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It has been a rough neighborhood, since the first settlement of Jericho was founded 1200 years ago.

I believe that during the British Mandate there was a UN proposal to have Jerusalem / al Quds, an 'international' city under international Governance.

It probably wouldn't have been workable in reality, but it was an interesting proposal nonetheless and is a sort of microcosm of what you mentioned above.

It is perhaps more relevant today than ever before, as Jerusalem / al Quds still seems to be the Jewel in the Crown, so to speak, for both sides. The very thing so often used by both to rule out talks, is any hint of discussion from the other demanding a change of the other's policy about it.

Deadlock :D
