Writing by Loretto on 30 January 2013 6:58pm

Hey folks, here's a piece I wrote because I was inspired about an op-ed piece in the New York Times. I will explain the melancholy later. Hope you enjoy it though:

Enjoyed that, Loretto!

Nice piece, Loretto. You don't simply use words: you dance with them, performing alongside them as a choreographer; you caress the reader's mind with their silky plumage.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate that. The piece is about a couch, but its also about a person. I was going to leave it until after the funeral tomorrow, but I will tell you now that my father-in-law passed away. And the second to last paragraph is really alluding to him. I have been asked to read a eulogy to him and I was honoured that the family asked me to do it. I cried a lot last Sunday, it didn't help that my husband decided to watch Waking Ned Devine. Anyway, my father-in-law isn't sick anymore.

Thank you Pete and Anne. You know, I didn't think I'd be effected by his death, but I am. Emotions are wildly strange things. Both my husband and son have their moments, I am sure tomorrow will be tough, but we'll get through it. Thanks again for your kind thoughts.

Thanks very much John and Sue. Eulogy went well, people asked me for copies of it. There was laughter and tears when I read, just what you expect at an Irish funeral. Here's how I finished it off:
In the words of xxxx’s favorite Irish comedian Hal Roach, the last goodbye really isn’t the last one at all. As Roach says,
“The son asks the father, “Father is it true that we come from dust and it is unto dust we shall return?” The father replies to his son, “Yes, son it is true.” The son responds, “Well you’d better take a look underneath my bed, because there is someone there either coming or going!”
