Sahara, Palin defeats village grandmaster at game. by ?palinfan? on 21 April 2013 6:12am

While traveling the Sahara, Michael Palin arrives in the African village of Chinguetti. He sits down in the cool of an evening to play a sort of board game, like checkers or drafts, against a local village elder who was, until Palin showed up, "grandmaster" of the game. With polite and helpful and assistance from other village men, Michael defeats the grandmaster elder, and the elder looks to be genuinely crestfallen.

I hope that this defeat was either a staged drama, or, if not, that Michael did something to assuage the elder gentleman's hurt ego after the cameras were switched off.

My money says it was not staged, but Michael made it all right afterward.

I remember that. and I'm sure any grandmaster can be beaten at a solo game if the opposition has lots of help with their play. I agree that the Palin team would have made it alright afterwards.
