Might not be hearing from me for a while by canaveralgumby on 11 August 2004 5:58pm

Hurricaine Charley (there's another example of a crappy movie adaptation of a great book, but we'll discuss that later...) is at time of this writing 70 mph heading for Jamaica and expected to hit the Florida peninsula Fri-Sat in some form or another.

I haven't purchased a single supply, which is uncharacteristic of me. Hurricaine Andrew JUST brushed by us (we were about one degree north of almost certain peril!)

See ya on the flipside! Party Hearty!

..yikes, Bonnie and Charley coming within a day of each other...and our friends elsewhere say they don't want to live in California because of earthquakes!! ..seems that Florida is scarier... at least right now... now, will you go get some batteries and some bottled water? keep us informed will you Cori? Sharon ps: maybe some large towels would come in handy, too..

DRIVE INTO THE EYE OF THE STORM!

tominator, you KNOW there are people sneaking around the National Guard, driving to Sannibel Island to surf the hurricaine!

Yes, macauley, Douglas Adams taught us that all you need in the Universe is a towel. It's true. :^)

UPDATE: (insert MP in loud 1969 plaid jacket and big 1969 hair here)

Hurricaine Charley will not, repeat, NOT, be hitting Cori, and the price of crotchless panties is still.........

It will make landfall tonight around Fort Myers in SW Florida, south of Tampa. About 2 million people have evacuated. They seem to be handling everything right, not like with Hurricaine Andrew. No one evacuated for that. We all said, "NAH! Stuff like that only happens to OTHER people!"

Charley will go over the Florida peninsula, across Orlando (just west of me!) and out to sea over Daytona Beach (just a bit north of me!). Once it gets over land mass, it loses some speed, but the rotation can still be around 75 mph.

At Cape Canaveral we'll just have some plain bad, stay in pajamas, stay in bed, watch old movies weather. Tornadoes are possible, but that's like every other day of every summer around tea time! A little flooding, a few downed power lines and trees, lightning, SSDD.

Our LEGEND is, Cape Canaveral never gets hit by a hurricaine becuase there's some geological phenomena about the cape that pushes the storms out to sea when they arrive here, and that's why they decided to build the Space Center here. I think it's a wive's tale. AFAIK all the capes on the Atlantic have gotten hit from time to time. I dunno. The Carolinas and the Louisiana/Texas Gulf coast seem to get hit really badly every single year, not us so much.

The barrier islands like Sannibel Island might be under water in the morning. I live on a barrier island here on the other coast. It's just a few city blocks wide in Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach, then there's a mi. wide river, then a 4 mi. wide island, then another mi. wide river, THEN the mainland! If it were coming our way we'd be long gone.

But I STILL say it beats shoveling the car out of the ice and snow at 6:30 in the morning.

So I guess I'll just ask that you all consider sending off a few dollars/pounds/euros to the Red Cross and/or SPCA. Pint of blood, canned goods, that sort of thing. If not for Florida, then for the Caribbean islands, those people have next to nothing to begin with, and we're only up to "C".
