Does anybody here have any Information about Geography by intrepid on 14 August 2004 4:17pm

This is a weird question, but does anybody here have a degree in Geography, or know anybody who has a degree in Geography? Does anybody live near a college or university which has Geography Department? If so, what kind of things are studied?
The truth is that I studied History in college, but my college was so small there wasn't a Geog. department, and it wasn't until after I graduated that I even knew you COULD get a degree in Geography. I'm looking at grad schools now, and I'll take any and all information people have on this topic.

Well, as a matter of fact, I have a Geography degree. There are many different areas of the field, including physical (such as ground composition, river and ocean characteristics, etc.), climatology (weather), urban (city planning and other dynamics of the urban landscape), human (interaction between humans and their environment), environmental, social (connections between people and their social environment), economic (locations of settlement patrterns, land use, etc. and their impact), cartography (maps), historical (a combo of history and the physical geography of where such historical sites are located, you might enjoy this type). These are the various lower level course types offered, and as you get into the upper level courses, you break the disciplines up into more narrower fields of study. I went to the University College of the Fraser Valley in British Columbia, Canada. Here is their website if you are interested: www.ucfv.bc.ca. Hope that helps you somewhat.

Dear Voxpops-
Thanks a lot! This was exactly the kind of information I was fishing for.
Yeah, it's historical geography which is what I'm most keen on, although I wouldn't be averse to taking a number of physical and cartographic courses along the way.
I've been looking up various universities with geography grad programs, particularly in the eastern US and Canada (Waterloo Ontario, for example). Can I ask what kind of degree you have, and in what area? There follows some sort of personal questions which you don't have to answer, like "has your degree been helpful in finding work?" and "did you enjoy studying it?"
Again, thanks for responding, and for the link. In my sheltered life I don't when I've met anyone with a geography degree, so I'm very happy that you responded. -David

I have a general Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography. I could specialize further at a grad school, but I think that I have had quite enough school for now. I am currently applying for a job in the government, so I will have to wait and see if all the work was worth it. I am glad I did it, and I would encourage you to at least check out your local universities and ask lots of questions. You never know unless you ask. Geography is an area which is scientifically based, but not as much as chemistry, biology, etc. If that hasn't scared you off, check it out.

All universities offer courses in physical & social geography through their liberal arts departments. They are required courses for those majoring in anthropoly, for example. Industrial design would be another.
