The Michael Palin Collection DVD by my dear on 28 October 2004 7:39am

The BBC website is offering The Michael Palin Collection on DVD - the release date is November 29/04.

Will these DVDs be region encoded? Also, has anybody living in North America ever attempted to buy something from the BBC website?

Thanks.

It's region 2 encoded so if you're in North America the solution is a region free DVD player. It's also cheaper from Amazon.co.uk.

You might try play.com as well. Not sure what the import regs are but sometimes buying DVDs online in the US and mailing them to UK addresses incurs import custom taxes, if theyre over a certain value. So its probably not a problem to buy the DVDs, just you might have to pay extra when theyre delivered.

Region 2 encoded, eh?

That's a shame. I'm not sure where or how I would go about buying a Region-free DVD player. To be honest, it's not something that I really want to do, either - especially since I just spent three-hundred dollars on a new DVD player.

This Michael Palin DVD Collection was what I had been hoping and praying for - it's the definitive set, and if you travel vicariously (especially through Michael) then, really, it's a must-have collection.

Why are these DVDs not available to us in North America!

I could be wrong about this, but aren't there just as many Palinites here in North America as there are over there in the U.K.?

Maybe the problem here is that the BBC has underestimated its North American audience? - I really wish that somebody associated with Michael Palin would do something about this.

Dear my dear

You could try a Google search. Use the make and model of your DVD player and use the keyword 'crack'. There is a possibility you can alter the region setting this way.
However I think there is only a limited number of times you can change regions so you could get stuck in region 2 when most of your DVDs are region 1 !

'Himalaya' is currently being watched by about 8 million people on the BBC. An approximate US equivalent would be 40 million people watching it on ABC.
If that were the case then all MP's work would be released in the US!

Aha! So it's the old re-set the region settings trick, eh?

You're suggesting that I download some highly illegal bit of software, and then trick my DVD player into thinking that it's suddenly in Region 2 - the only drawback here being that my player might decide to remain a Region 2 player.

Hmm... I don't know if I like the sound of that.

So 8 million people are watching Himalaya on the BBC, eh? Those are pretty big numbers.

By the way, I'm guessing that out in your backyard you've got... two sheds? Am I right? Don't bother to tell me that I'm right, I already know that I am.

Actually you dont download any illegal software to reprogram your DVD player, the software is already on the player, all you do is what the factory does, and reprogram the machine to a different setting, in this case from region 1 (I guess) to a region 2. Your player will stay on that setting til you decide to reprogram it, or you unplug it. The only drawback is that this works best on cheap players, the more upmarket machines are harder to reprogram, and have added features like RCE which might get messed up if you try to reprogram them. I imagine any machine these days costing $300 would have an RCE facility. Still a better option would be to use a PC.

How could I forget you Lyn after that night of passion we spent in Romford ;-)

Arthur 'TwoSheds' Jackson is indeed a Python sketch.
