Do they know it's Christmas? by Wild in Africa on 15 November 2004 2:50am

Without wanting to be a spoiler at the party I wish I could persuade the re-makers of the Band Aid single to rewrite their lyrics. They were wildly inappropriate last time and even more so this time. Of course the Ethiopians knew it was Christmas. These people were Christian long before Europe and even in the midst of disaster are deeply devout people. To imply because they were benighted starving Africans that they were also so traumatised as to be unaware of what was most sacred to them is deeply insulting. Similarly this time around the proceeds are going towards the people of Darfur in Sudan; Muslims who do not celebrate Christmas. While not wishing to downplay the great good that BandAid/Live Aid has done over the years surely in the intervening 20 years a bit of basic research would have revealed that the original lyrics were not just inappropriate but an insult to the culture and beliefs of the peoples for whom they wre intending to benefit, and also exposed the perhaps innnocent and well intended naivity of the pop stars involved.

Oh for pete's sake take it in the way it was meant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It helped starving people last time, and probably will do again. The point isn't that it's Christmas, but to get people to think about others ALL YEAR.

it is also meant for the uk market - i doubt those who are starving and will benefit from the proceeds will care what words are sung to be honest

well said anne!!

I actually agree with Wild in Africa..... Anne and Diamond are so ignorant to the outside world and know so little about this issue and how Ethiopians really feel

I agree with Anne and Diamond I think. Although some lyrics may seem inappropriate, in the end it is just a song and think of all the good it has done!

What a bloody cheek! I am not ignorant to (I'm sure you mean OF) the outside world; neither is Diamond I should think.

I am sure some of the Ethiopians at the time were saying 'Hey man - they reckon we don't know Christmas!' before they keeled over (to be blunt)! Yeah, right! They had more important issues!

I support A I and have seen heart-renching poverty in the 3rd world countries I've visited - have you, troll?!!!

The song was just meant to raise money for a good cause, and not to be scrutenised over. Just let it wash over you and enjoy, I say!!

Its probably more catchy, therefore will sell more copies, with the current lyrics than having to put the(admittedly correct) fact that of course they know its christmas, they just haven't experienced the "Christmas spirit" because they are starving and no one is providing much aid. So, in a sence, they dont know its "christmas" because no one is showing them it is by helping them out.
That's my "meaning", but at the end of the day, its just a song, so Bring Your Own Meaning.
As long as the song helps those in Sudan, that's all i care about!!
Love eloise xx

Thats the meaning I took from it too, Ello: Not that they didn't actually know its Christmas, but that people should help them out, as Christmas is a time for giving :D
