Michael's Sheffield accent by dangermouse on 18 November 2004 12:55pm

Or lack of. At the question and answer session of his recent appearance in Wellington, I asked him when he lost his Sheffield accent - he said that he only brings it out on special occasions(!) and that as his parents were from the South, he didn't really have the Sheffield accent anyway.

The he asked, "Are you from Sheffield?", to which I replied, "No, Leicester"

Michael's response ? "Leicester? Where's Leicester?" - brought the house down!

Did you see the recent Parkinson show on ITV with our Michael? The Worlds two most boring Yorkshiremen is how they refer to each other. Parky though has kept his accent, whereas Mr Palin's has gone walkabout in the bush somewhere.
When I were a lad real yorkshiremen spoke like where they were from!!

I think 3 years at Oxford may also have something to with it.

Regional accents get beaten out of small children at prep school.
