Sorry to say this, Paul, but this site will never be unanimously Conservative as long as I come here: this American will NOT be voting for the Conservative Party in the May election, and I believe that I speak for all the other U.S. citizens on this board. You may take some consolation in the fact that we won't be voting for Labour, either. We will be not voting in a block.

Re: Election Update on the 22nd April by intrepid on 23 April 2005 7:52pm

I insist: the Americans on this site will not vote for the Conservative Party in the UK's May election. Neither will the Germans, Dutch or Japanese contributers to this site. It's considered bad form to vote in countries where you don't live or claim citizenship. The Conservative Party will only remain in opposition if it counts on the votes of foreigners living abroad.

Wow intrepid you know every person from German,America,Japan and Holland thats impressive. Be realistic people from a certain country won't all vote the same otherwise this would be an easy election!!

To be brutally honest, I don't know every person from Germany, America Japan or Holland, but doesn't the UK have a rule about Japanese citizens not being allowed to vote in the May UK General Elections? Call it unfair, but I'm not qualified to vote in the UK, and neither are the Dutch people on this site. (Dutch people- please tell me if I'm wrong!! I don't want to look like a dingbat)
I don't know why they won't let this upstanding, taxpaying American citizen vote in the UK General Election- I mean, I listen to the BBC, I can quote Monty Python, and I've even visited England and Northern Ireland. I speak English fluently. Sad to say, their outdated electoral laws won't let me or 40 million South Koreans vote in their General Elections. It's undemocratic, but that's the way it is.
It's not just us! Most of the 6 billion people on this planet won't be participating in the UK's General Election in May! No, I haven't met most of them, to be honest, but I'm reasonably sure they won't be allowed to vote. But don't think of this as "sour grapes". Many of us can vote in our own countries, so that's some consolation. Good luck to all parties involved, and to you who are qualified to vote in the UK General Election, enjoy it, and spare a thought for the rest of the world's population who can't contribute to the democratic process in Great Britain or Northern Ireland.

Paul
Unbeknown to the Conservative party who I am sure would prefer it otherwise we all participate in a political system that you may have been aware of but it seems do not subscribe to. It is something called Democracy. That means that this site will not become Tory but will continue to reflect the diverse views of the many people who visit it. That means that while many of us disagree fundamentally with your political opinion we will respect your right to have that opinion, while doing everything that is democratically and legally permissible to ensure that the Conservative Party's years in the political wilderness continue to be long and bitter.
