Conservation in Africa by robnights on 17 May 2005 9:43pm

Hi,

I'm planning going to Africa for a few months in summer 2006. I'm going to arrive and get down to some conservation with the locals.

I dont agree with paying the extortionate prices that these 'gap year' programs charge, so why not turn up and get at it yourself?

I'm just wondering if anyone here is interested in joining me in this? I'd like to get a group of us to go, and, yes, have a good time, but mostly, help out people less fortunate than ourselves.

Regards.

I do seriously recommend some rigorous background research before just turning up in some African country to help out the poor Africans conserve their own wildlife. I do speak from about 25 years of doing humanitarian aid and development work, mostly in Africa.
Lots of countries have quite advanced conservation programmes primarily staffed and run by their own people. Their main problem is lack of funds for example to keep their vehicles operational or to pay staff. They don't really need well meaning but inexperienced westerners coming in to help them out.
If I can help and advise I am really happy to do so, although I am actually travelling to Kenya and Sudan later this week for two weeks so will be out of touch during that time.
Do let me know if I can help and give some sound practical and well intentioned advice.

Agree with WiA. You shouldn't just turn up and expect to work. For a start many countries require work permits even for voluntary work. They have to protect the local job market from well-meaning visitors.

If you want to help with aid orphans in western Kenya rather than conservation I can put you in touch with a UK charity doing work there. You needn't do an expensive gapo thing, simply arrange with the organisers and "turn up" under your own steam.

Has anyone been to Fez in Morocco? Would you recommend going?
Thanks,

Hi, I do know people who have done this before, who can put me in contact with organisations etc. Just wondering if anyone else is up to it.
