  The Chatter Box : Travel
travel journals about Italy by mini_robin on 28 September 2005 3:16pm
I've just come back from holiday in Umbria.
I liked it so much that I'm interested in reading a couple of books about the area.
Searching Amazon.com didn't give me many suggestions.
Could anyone kindly recommend me good travel journals about Umbria or the centre of Italy?
There is a condition: I would rather avoid the book about “thirty something women wanted change her life, so went to Italy and bought a house and her man" kind of story.
Oh, and my first language is not English so I would prefer the books that are written with no nonsense, crisp style. Just like Mr Palin's books.

Although they're not really about central Italy, and they're not strictly speaking travel journals, I would strongly recommend Tim Parks' books. He is an English academic who is married to an Italian and lives near Verona. The first is 'Italian Neighbours', in which he describes when they moved to Italy. In the second book 'An Italian Education', he tells of his experience bringing up children in Italy, and in 'A Season with Verona' he travels around Italy with the football fans of Hellas Verona.
They are very well written, with none of that 'thirty-something woman' feel about them, and deeply explore modern Italian culture and attitudes.
I hope you'll enjoy them!
