Silly little question by Ellerd on 1 October 2005 11:57am

Is it true that the green bits you sometimes find on potatoes are poisonous? Or is this just an Old Wive's Tale?

I found a PDF file about potato storage. If you have Adobe Acrobat then you can see it:

<http://www.uspotatoes.com/downloads/PDF/Handling.pdf#search='potato%20storage'>

If you can't see it, here's a lame attempt at summarizing:

Potatos continue to be alive after being harvested. The sprouting that occurs is the the plant's own sprout, and is harmless and should just be removed before preparation.

Exposed to too much light, potatoes can turn green. This is a form of chlorophyll and is poisonius.

A bruised or cut potato is more susceptible to fungal and bacterial diseases. The potato should be purchased with skin on and intact. It should feel dry when you hold it.

BTW kazzzz, tomatoes are part of the nightshade family. Enjoy your pizza!

"Potatoes continue to be alive after being harvested". That's kind of spooky. They're sort of vegetable zombies.

Well, that's why fruits and vegetables keep ripening after they're picked!

I went vegetable shopping yesterday (exciting!). If the potatoes weren't covered in green lumps, they had festy-looking black holes in them. And this was from a big chain store! Looks like I won't be having mashed potatoes anytime this week...
