The Producers by Miss-M on 14 January 2006 2:08pm

Has anyone seen the film version of Mel Brooks' musical The Producers? I saw it today and I thought it was fantastic. Some critics haven't been kind to it here in Australia, and I was wondering how it's faring in the US, UK, etc? I guess Mel Brooks' humour only appeals to a specific audience. You either get him or you don't. I highly recommend the film and the Broadway musical for that matter. Not that I was privileged enough to see it on Broadway but our Australian cast was pretty damn good if I do say so myself! :o)

Hi Missy. The public opinions and reviews are split in the USA too. I guess you just have to love theatre, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick to enjoy this type of film. I've seen only bits of the film from TV trailers, thus, I can't give an opinion.
But very mixed and the pros are the harshest .

I saw it over Christmas and I really enjoyed it. Except for the plot, it doesn't bear a whole lot of resemblence to the original film (which had a much more "Mel Brooksy" feel than this). I didn't see the live version, but you get the feeling that they didn't do much ADAPTING of it to make the film- they mostly just did the stage show in front of a camera. The scenes are longer than in a normal movie, for the most part the sets are quite obviously sets, usually seen only from one angle, but most noticably, the acting is stage acting, which is unsettling to see in closeup at first. It's kind of on the long side, but I kind of liked the novelty of getting theatrical intensity for 10 bucks.

I haven't seen this new version but I loved the original, especially for the line, "I want everything I've ever seen in the movies." Linz

Well, here in the US, I can see where there are certain, how shall I say, "demographics" of people who might not enjoy the film, say, the "Blur Collar Comedy Tour" demographic.

NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT!

My personal favorite Mel Brooks film is "Silent Movie." Never been released on DVD. :^(

I'm looking forward to seeing the Producers. I grew up with the movie. I couldn't give a rip what any critics think.

Linz, the line "I want everything I've ever seen in the movies" is also in the musical version. You should check it out!
