Gallipoli by Ellerd on 30 April 2006 3:02am

I just watched this documentary by the Turkish director Tolga Ornek. Jeremy Irons and Sam Neill provide the narration. It documents the 1915 Gallipoli campaign of WWI from all sides of the conflict - British, Australian, New Zealander, French and Turkish. Absolutely no flag-waving, no bias towards any side.

It's amazing what these guys went through. In some instances, they just charge out of their trenches with the knowledge that they won't survive. What makes people do this? The stories they tell in their letters home are very graphic - imagine if you were a soldier's mother at home and you read of fields of rotting corpses and people drowning in their own excrement. Then there are the stories of the two sides being civil to one another - exchanging items like cigarettes and tinned beef, arranging temporary cease-fires to bury the dead, and at one stage Turkish soldiers taking bets on the winners of an Allied football match!

It's a very moving documentary, and if you get the opportunity to watch it I highly recommend! Some people should have a box of tissues nearby though...

Wow! I've seen stuff about Gallipoli, but this seems like the most intense.

The Mel Gibson movie is pretty good too.

I'm not sure if Gallipoli was in Michael's Sahara series or was it too far east? I've just checked and found that Gallipoli is a penninsula in Turkey, nowhere near Michael's Sahara route. I've maybe got it confused by references to it with Benghazi and Tobruk from World War 2.
