Wild, Now I Need Your Help. by tucsonmike on 8 May 2006 2:15am

We had our first advance speech meeting today. My club drafted me into doing something about Darfur for our July meeting. I may allude to some other things in the Sudan, because we have a large Sudanese refugee community here in Tucson. Well anyone elses help is welcome of course, however Wild has been to Sudan.

Keep us apprised about what you come up with and if there is any way we can help at a distance.

Glad to be able to help and what can I do? If you want to read up a bit on a background to Darfur please check out this website for which I wrote a series of background articles a while ago:
http://www.polosbastards.com/artman/publish/article_18.shtml

I expect to be off to Kashmir in about 10 days for a week but should be around long enough to help you out.

Wild,
Thank you for the article for starters. The speech would be set up as a discussion, where I would be more like a discussion leader. I am looking for some things people can agree on to be of assistance to Darfur and the Sudan.

Mostly, what would persuade people and why should they care?

I now have a contact at one of the TV stations, and I was going to try to reach out to the Sudanese refugee groups in town.

I'll let you know what I have.
Thanks so much.
Mike

The author of the book I posted mentioned the movie Khartoum. Look I grew up sitting with my father watching it, but Nicholas Coughlan is right. The movie is cheesy with Sir Laurence Olivier as the Mahdi wearing boot polish and having few lines. I'll be the movie could be redone now. Denzel Washington as the Mahdi?

I thought of the historical stuff. Gladstone should have known better than to send Gordon. He should have suspected Gordon would not leave. Gladstone really needed a firm soldier with a contingent of British soldiers to forcibly remove the non Sudanese if necessary.

The article (bookmarked above) is the third of three that I wrote for that website looking at different aspects of the Darfur conflict.

What are the issues and why should people care? The issues are possibly 300,000 people dead from preventable causes over the last 3 years and over 2 million driven from their homes in a relentless campaign of ethnic cleansing which could be classed as genocidal.
An evil renegade government which has shown over 17 years that it cares nothing for its people and everything about staying in power, that professes Islam but slaughters fellow Muslims in hundreds of thousands.
At the moment the humanitarian imperative is uppermost but the root causes of the conflict must be addressed before there is any possibility of this horror ending.
Suggest you also check out the website of Professor Eric Reeves at Smith College who while being rather strident also mostly has his facts in order and will horrify you with the harsh reality.
The web address is www.sudanreeves.org

Wild, thank you. I started contacting the Sudanese organizations in town and from what you wrote, I might contact the Moslem community center here.
I'll probably think of other things. I will call Manute Bol's organization when I am off on Thursday.

Well, I may be meeting with some of the "Lost Boys." It turns out a major realtor in town helps to sponsor them. She is a major player in the Jewish community here. Her phone number was in the Tucson Citizen I called her, I am supposed to call back tomorrow. She wants me to go up to her house in the Foothills and meet them and see videos.

Haven't called Manute Bol yet, and I still haven't gotten any writing done.

Thought I would update you. Yes, I met with Jill today. I will be meeting a group of the Lost Boys soon. She has had almost sixty of them living in various homes here in Tucson, including hers. I didn't have to call Manute Bol, but he may be coming here this summer.

So I have no idea where this is going, but it is going...
